While you serve as a Precious Blood Volunteer you will work with people who suffer being on the margins of society. The agencies you will work for have service to others as their core mission.
Chicago is one of the great cities of North America. An energetic metropolis known for its diversity and grit. Our volunteers live and work at Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.
Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation
Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR) works towards reconciliation and healing with those in the Chicago community and our Church who have been impacted by violence and conflict. PBMR’s ministries reach out to the victim, the wrongdoer, and the community to create a safe space where healing can begin and where people can find the support and encouragement needed to begin reconciliation. They strive to be a resource to the community to find restorative ways to heal and rebuild after violence and conflict.
PBMR serves people in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago’s south side. It is a collaborative ministry of the Cincinnati and Kansas City Provinces of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood.
As a Precious Blood Volunteer serving at PBMR you will have the opportunity to walk with and serve others in a variety of ways. They include mentoring, tutoring, advocacy, and being part of restorative justice efforts. This placement is for you if you are looking for a career in the ministry, social work, law, advocacy or education.
Kansas City, Missouri
Our main placements are in Kansas City, Missouri. The Kansas City metropolitan area sprawls across two states and moves from urban, to suburban to rural all within a few miles. Our volunteers live right off of Troost Ave., which has been a racial and economic dividing line in the Kansas City area. We love having our volunteers living there because they can be people who help make the dividing line a meeting place.
St. James Place (part of Bishop Sullivan Center)
St. James Place is a service center for people who are homeless, looking for work, or need a meal to eat. Their mission is to provide food, jobs and aid. Our volunteers work in the food pantry, supervise the community kitchen in the evening, and provide assistance to people who need medications.
Legal Aid of Western Missouri
Legal Aid of Western Missouri is the only organization in western Missouri that provides free civil legal services to low-income people. They work to address root causes of community problems through the legal system. Their work is done in collaboration with other community organizations who work on housing, health care, public assistance, domestic violence and other issues. Our volunteers would work on legal issues for people living in public housing.
KC Care Clinic
A free health clinic that provides services in general medicine, HIV prevention and primary care, behavioral health, and dentistry, KC Care Clinic works to promote health and wellness to the under served in the Kansas City community. Our volunteers work in conjunction with nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals in service to people living in poverty. Our volunteers take patients to their exam rooms, interview them, take their vitals and communicate with the other health professionals before a patient is treated.
Cristo Rey Kansas City High School
Cristo Rey Kansas City High School provides a high quality, Catholic college preparatory education for students from low-income backgrounds in Kansas City, Missouri. Our volunteers work with young people and have filled a variety of needs there including teaching, coaching, mentoring and assisting teachers. Cristo Rey Kansas City is part of the Cristo Rey Network of schools in North America.
St. Joseph, Missouri
St. Joseph is a small sized city of 76,000 located an hour north of Kansas City.
Dream Seekers of St. Joseph
Our placement in St. Joseph is with Dream Seekers of St. Joseph. The Dream Seekers program works to bring people together who are from varied backgrounds and bridge some of the divides in the St. Joseph community. The volunteer will manage the day to day activities of the Dream Seekers program. The volunteer at Dream Seekers should have management experience and a desire to work to break down the barriers of poverty and isolation.
