September 13th Presentation: The Spiritual Exercises of Fr. Anthony de Mello
by Br. Daryl Charron, C.PP.S.

anthonydemelloFr. Anthony de Mello, S.J. was a Jesuit priest from India who was a retreat master and writer of spiritual theology. He was happy that the path of missionary activity between his native India and the United States had become a two-way path in which culturally, spiritually, and theologically, the country from the East and the country from the West had much to give and much to gain from fruitful exchange with each other. In his life and education Anthony de Mello embodied the meeting of these two paths. He had a first-hand familiarity with the spiritualities of the East. His spiritual exercises include techniques and disciplines designed to help people learn to pray by making the simple discovery that God is already present in their lives. He creatively does this through the power of stories and meditation. These spiritual exercises are still alive with meaning and insight today because he had an extraordinary influence and ability to set people free by getting them to think outside the box.
